Former President of Kenya H.E. Daniel Arap Moi Endorses the Campaign for Global Road Safety.
Former President of the Republic of Kenya His Excellency Hon. Daniel Arap Moi has added his support to the Make Roads Safe campaign for global road safety. This is an International campaign advocating for public and political awareness of an epidemic that kills 3000 people and 500 children daily. The former president endorsed his signature to the petition that is represented in Kenya by Chariots of Destiny Organization, a local based NGO that aims to also advocate for road safety. The occasion was witnessed by close to 1000 people who participated at this annual event which was arranged to commemorate the World Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims and their families and held at the Kenyatta International Conference (K.I.C.C.) in Nairobi.
Speaking during the event at the K.I.C.C., Mr. Moi urged the government of Kenya to step up efforts to end road carnage. The former Head of State called for the establishment of a social security and health insurance for workers in the transport industry in Kenya in order to mitigate the effects of road accidents. He said survivors and their families were usually left devastated byroad mishaps
and formal financial security could help them cope with their situations. Recounting that he and the current President Mwai Kibaki had on different occasions been victims of road crash, Mr. Moi called on public service vehicles drivers to adhere to traffic rules to minimize loss of life. He called for new and updated legislation to address emerging issues in road safety.
During his tour around the exhibition stands set in the foyer of the K.I.C.C., Mr. Moi visited the Chariots of Destiny Organization booth where he was appraised on the objectives of the petition and he applauded the efforts of this organization in the ongoing campaign for advocacy and creating awareness about global road safety. He encouraged the team at the booth to press on relentlessly with the campaign as he told them - “The impact of road carnage has reached catastrophic levels in the country and we need to do something to change this”.
The former president of Kenya was escorted by Channa Commanday, the Chairlady of the Association for International Road Safety Travel, (ASIRT) Kenyan Chapter who briefed him about the background of the founder of Chariots of Destiny Organization, Casey Marenge who is presently visiting the U.S.A on a mission for road safety advocacy as the Youth Ambassador for Make Roads Safe.
Casey participated in a similar event which was observed by ASIRT in Washington, D.C., U.S.A on the same day. As part of the program for the commemoration, Casey also attended a briefing with the Congressional Caucus on Global Road Safety at the Capitol Hill where she discussed with U.S. Congressmen the road safety situation in Africa and her work to promote road safety following the road crash which left her paralyzed from shoulders down.
