UN General Assembly Road Safety Debate, UN headquarters, New York
March 31st 2008
The United Nations General Assembly session on Global Road Safety was held at the UN Headquarters in New York on the 31st of March 2008. This was a historic session as the United Nations approved the first-ever UN conference on road safety in an effort to reduce the rapidly growing death toll on the world's roads. The Chariots of Destiny Organization was privileged to be represented at this historic event and especially after the vigorous campaign that took place in several parts of the country. Lord Robertson, Chairman of the Commission for Global Road Safety and Michelle Yeoh, actress and Make Roads Safe campaign ambassador presented the petition to Ban-ki-moon UN Secretary-General. Speakers included representatives from Slovenia, Iceland, Vietnam, Thailand, Ukraine, India, United States and Benin who presented information on the rapidly growing gap in road traffic injuries and deaths between the highly-motorized countries and the low -income countries and addressed what needs to be done to close this gap.
There were also discussions on the strategic need for this UN Ministerial Conference and how this conference can help accelerate progress toward closing this gap and saving millions of lives. Over one million people globally signed the petition to the UN. Through the efforts of COD thousands of Kenyans also signed the petition! (www.makeroadssafe.org)
