Real Life Experiences

Eva Mueni

Eva Mueni is a 26 year old lady living in Nairobi with her auntie.  She is the first born in a family of two.  On completing her secondary education she attended Nyeri Polytechnic where she obtained a diploma in secretarial studies.  On completion she landed a job with A.A.R. as a personal assistant.

In July of 2005 while travelling back from Athi River on a work-related trip, Eva was involved in a road accident where the driver knocked a pothole and lost control of the car, colliding with an oncoming vehicle.  Passersby helped to get her out of the car and rushed her to Athi River district hospital.  After three hours Eva was then rushed to Nairobi hospital for her first surgery which took about nine hours.  It was on recovery that the doctor explained the extent of her injury-she was now paraplegic! paralysed from the waist down. Eva took the news quite calmly which she believes was because the reality had not sunk in.  She spent about five months at Nairobi hospital where she developed some complications like pressure sores and had to have another surgery done after the metal plate inserted in her leg became loose.  Due to financial constraints, Eva had to move to Kenyatta National hospital where she spent the next three months before moving to the spinal injury hospital for rehabilitation.  It was here that Eva learnt to cope with her condition as she met and related with more people in a similar situation and as she watched them go on with life it was then that she realised that she too can go on with her life.

After being discharged six months later, Eva spent most of her time sitting at home with so much potential but yet nothing to do as it was only when she tried to go back to work that she found out she had been replaced and there was no hope of her being recruited.  All was not lost as Eva joined and begun to work with Chariots of Destiny with a passion to support a cause she believed in– economic empowerment for people living with disabilities! Eva has since then benefited from a wheelchair from the organization as well as exposure and self-confidence.
